Brief Introduction on Cloud Computing:
Cloud Computing is a Computing Model, not a Technology. In this computing model, we customers plug into Cloud to access IT resources which would provided and priced as per our demand.
Cloud computing technology is sparking a huge change in application development circles. Just like the changes that moved publishing technology from paper to bits, making it possible for us to have information about anything in the world right at our fingertips in a flash, the move to a cloud computing infrastructure for application development is making it possible to build robust, enterprise-class applications in a fraction of the time and at a much lower cost.
Cloud Computing is not all about new technology but infact new name applied to collection of older technology that are packed, sold and delivered in new way.Do check out the following video on cloud computing:
Types of Cloud Computing and their examples:
SaaS( Software As A Service)
Its most widely known and widely used form of Cloud Computing.SaaS provides all the functions of a Traditional Application to thousands of users through a Web browser and not a “locally installed” application.
Best example of SaaS would be Salesforce.com,Google.com’s Gmail and Apps, instant messaging system from AOL,Yahoo & Google,Skype.
PaaS(Platform as a Service)
It delivers virtualised servers on which customers can run existing applications or develop new ones without which having to worry about maintaining Operating system,Load Balancing or Computing Capacity.
PaaS vendors provide API or development platforms to create and run applications in cloud i.e. using Internet.
PaaS is an outgrowth of Software as a Service (SaaS).
Eg of PaaS are Google Maps,Microsoft’s Windows Azure platform, Windows Live,Amazon EC2 (Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud ) , etc are among the providers of this kind of cloud computing.
IaaS(Infrastructure as a Service)
IaaS is designed to augment or replace the functions of an entire data center.IaaS is a model where an organisation outsources its IT infrastructure to companies who manage them through one management interface. This saves time and expense of capital equipment deployment but does not reduce cost of configuration, integration or management and these tasks must be performed remotely.
Amazon Web Services, Rackspace Cloud, GoGrid , etc are among the providers of this kind of cloud computing.
