Sick ! I am sick of blocking SPAM comments manually on my self hosted WordPress site.Initially my blog traffic was minimal,but when i started increasing,spam comments became viral.Again those comments were related to Apply for Loans,Viagra,Cialis or Tapes of any celebs etc!
If you are using WordPress Default commenting system, then you need to simply setup Akismet.I liked Akismet and may consider it as great spam detection plugon but it failed to prevent spamming on my blog completely.Later realised this can be blocked 100% by entering bannedmuch abused words in comments to be flagged off as SPAM.

Recaptcha
WP ReCaptcha works by displaying two images that a user must enter before their comment can be posted. Concept of this plugin is that as bots can’t actually see the images, so they can’t successfully enter the word.
Frankly speaking I generally tend to avoid this plugin as Humans like me who are to lazy to drop in a comment,on seeing captcha would be refraining from commenting on my blog.

Math Comment Spam Protection
It would simply ask the visitor making the comment to answer a simple math question. This is intended to prove that the visitor is a human being and not a spam robot.

Thanks for sharing this list of some great spam prevention WordPress plugins. Those are some great plugind but you should have also added GASP in it.
